The Sri Lanka Military Academy inaugurated the first working day of the new year with a flag - hoisting ceremony held at the New Headquarters, where the Deputy Commandant, Colonel K H K Kottawattha RWP RSP USP and the Commanding Officer of the Officer Cadet Wing, Colonel Ajith Wickramasekera hoisted the National and Academy flags respectively in the presence of all Wing Heads and a cross section of officers, civil lecturers, other ranks and civil employees. Having observed a two - minute silence in honour of fallen war heroes, the Adjutant - SLMA read the Government employees’ oaths. Afterwards, the Deputy Commandant read the new year message issued by the Commander of the Army, which underscored the armed personnel’s contribution to the attainment of sustainable development in the country.

A two-day refresher course for all officer instructors and academic lecturers of the Sri Lanka Military Academy was conducted on 27th and 28th of December 2018. Brigadier Priyantha Senaratne, the Commandant emphasized, in his opening remarks, the importance of revising and updating the knowledge and teaching methodology of all instructors and lecturers. This course is traditionally held prior to the commencement of a new semester, to help instructors refresh their subject knowledge and methods of instruction. The course also included stimulating sessions on public speaking & presentation skills, lecture on MS Branch Duties by a senior officer from the MS Branch and a debate on “Trainees should have free access to technology” conducted by course officers and academic lectures.

The Commandant Brigadier Priyantha Senaratne laid the foundation stone for a three-storey classroom complex on 27th December 2018 amidst chanting of pirith by Buddhist monks to invoke blessings on the occasion.

His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena, the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and Commander in Chief of Armed Forces and His Excellency Cheng Xueyuan, the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka ceremonially opened the new Headquarters and Auditorium complex of SLMA on 15th December 2018 on the invitation of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General N U M M W Senanayake and Commandant of the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Brigadier H H A S P K Senaratne.

On 14th evening the passing out officer cadets conducted the traditional research based Final Presentation on “Non-traditional Threats and Challenges to Sustained Peace in Sri Lanka” which was attended by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General N U M M W Senanayake as the Chief Guest together with a few former Commandants, all senior officers of the Army, Defence attaches and Advisors of friendly foreign countries and officers of the Military Academy.

On 15th evening, the Commissioning Dinner which is traditionally held to welcome the newly commissioned officers to the officer corps of the Army was held at the Officer Cadets’ Mess with the participation of the Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest, all Principal Staff Officers, Colonel Commandants, Colonels of the Regiments and Defence attaches and Advisors of friendly foreign counties.

The traditional Pipping Ceremony was conducted in the newly declared open Headquarters & Auditorium Complex and it was attended by the Commander of the Army, the Commandant and all officers of SLMA, parents and well-wishers.

The 93rd Commissioning Parade of the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa was ceremonially held on 15th December 2018 at the Academy parade ground with the participation of the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena as the Chief Guest. Upon arrival, the President was welcomed by the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General N U M M W Senanayake and Commandant of the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Brigadier H H A S P K Senaratne and he paid floral tribute to the fallen heroes at the Monument of Peace.

The Awards Ceremony 2018 was held on 12th December at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, where 71 Officer Cadets received medals, certificates and trophies from the Chief Guest, Brigadier H H A S P K Senaratne, the Commandant of the institute. The Ceremony was also attended by the Deputy Commandant, all Wing Heads, officer and NCO instructors and all officer cadets.

The passing out parade of Drill Instructor Course no 118 was held on 06th December 2018 at the Sri Lanka Military Academy. Brigadier H H A S P K Senaratne RSP psc, the Commandant of the institute graced the occasion as the Chief Guest with the Deputy Commandant, all Wing Heads and a cross section of officers and other ranks from all Wings. There were also invitee officers representing all regiments of the Army.
