Brigadier WSN Hemarathna RWP RSP psc assumed duties as the 12th Deputy Commandant of the Sri Lanka Military Academy on 08 November 2021 in a simple ceremony amid chanting of pirith. Lighting of the traditional oil lamp and placing of his signature on the first official document at the auspicious time symbolized the assuming of office.

The first day of the basic military training is a very special occasion of an Officer Cadet’s life. Intake KDU 39 consisting of 102 energetic youth began their intensive military training on 1 November 2021 and their Opening Address was held at Sino-Lanka Friendship Auditorium.

The Opening Address of Intake 61(V) took place at the Sino-Lanka Friendship Auditorium on 19 October 2021. The Intake consisted of sixty-four young energetic Officer Cadets who are geared to undergo the demanding military course of twelve months with courage and determination.

Music, a wonderful creation of the human with vocal articulation is universal with its invisible healing power. Once human ideas are blended with music, songs are born, which brings a deep meaning to our lives. “Three Thal” was an indoor musical concert organized by the Academy band, “THE LEADS” with the participation of all intakes of the Academy.

October 10, 1949 marked the establishment of the Ceylon Army which was composed of both Regular and Volunteer Forces. The Sri Lanka Military Academy conducted a special programme to celebrate the 72nd Army Day Anniversary celebrations on 10 October 2021. The programme commenced by hoisting the Army flag by the Commandant, Brigadier WWHRRVMNDKB Niyangoda RWP RSP USP ndu psc. Afterwards, the Army song was sung and a two-minute silence was observed in commemoration of the fallen war heroes. The Adjutant of the Military Academy, Major RAA Ranawaka RWP RSP USP psc SLLI read the felicitation message issued by the Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil , which conveyed the Sri Lanka Army’ s multi-disciplinary role in the wake of both traditional and non-traditional threats.

In officer cadets’ training curriculum, the exercise “Frozen Trout” holds a prominent position as one of the major field exercises which teaches them conventional war fighting techniques in the freezing climate and arduous terrains of the general area, Ambewela.

Sports competitions are held all over the world to enhance teamwork, cooperation and coordination among sports personnel. Learning these skills helps the participants in their life and professional careers. The Sri Lanka Military Academy conducts the inter company sports meet annually in order to test the sportsmanship, leadership skills of trainee Officer Cadets and their capabilities in organizing competitions. The Opening Ceremony of the Inter Company Sports Meet - 2021 was held on 24 September at the Polo Ground which was graced by the Commandant of the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Brigadier WWHRRVDKB Niyangoda RWP RSP USP ndu psc as the Chief Guest. Competitors of Intake 89, 90, 89B, Lady 17 (V), 60(V) and 91 representing their respective Companies took part enthusiastically in field and track events to make their Company to the Champion Company of the Inter Company Sports Meet - 2021.

Debate is an excellent activity in academic learning and linguistic enhancement as it engages students in a variety of cognitive and linguistic ways. In order to provide meaningful listening and speaking experience to trainee Officer Cadets at SLMA and to develop argumentative skills within them, the English Department of the SLMA conducted the Inter-intake Debate Competition-2021 with the participation of all the intakes of the Academy.

The “Exercise Scorpion” is one of the major exercises conducted for final term officer cadets with the aim of teaching them the internal security component of the COIN package. In the exercise the cadets underwent the practical aspects of counterinsurgency situations in urban areas such as establishing and maintaining an ops room, manning of VP’s and KP’s, conducting roadblocks, CIMIC activities, cordon and search operations, crowd dispersal etc.
