The Language Studies Division, Academic Wing of the SLMA conducts the Inter Intake Debate Competition as an annual event of the Military Academy Calendar with the purpose of improving debating skills, public speaking skills, logical thinking, awareness on debatable issues and concerns, and corporation among officer cadets.

The Opening Address of the Commandant marks traditionally the initiation of officer cadet training at SLMA. In accordance with this tradition, on 07th August 2023, the Opening Address of Intake DE I-2023 consisting 10 Officer Cadets; four Medical Officers, one Dental Surgeon, three Civil Engineers and two Electrical and Electronic Engineers was held at the Sino Lanka Friendship Auditorium with the gracing of the Commandant, Brig M T I Mahalekam WWV RWP RSP USP ndu psc as the Chief Guest and the event was also attended by the Wing Heads, Officers and Other Rank Instructors of the Academy.

‘Parents' Day’ is one of the special events held at the Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) to showcase the multidisciplinary skills of trainee Officer Cadets before their beloved parents, near and dear ones. On 5th August 2023, the Parents' Day of Intake 92 B and SC 20 was held at SLMA with the participation of the Commandant-SLMA, Brigadier M T I Mahalekam WWV RWP RSP USP ndu psc as the Chief Guest. The Parents’ Day programme was designed with a Taekwondo and PT Display at the Gymnasium, an Equestrian Display, a Demonstration of an Attack on an Insurgent Hideout at the Polo Ground, Commandant’s Address and an entertainment session at the Officer Cadets' Mess.

The history of the Cadet Government of the Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) dates back to 1968 when Intake 1 began its basic military training at the Army Training Center (ATC), Diyatalawa. The prime aim of establishing the Cadet Government was to form up a firm link between Officer Instructors and Officer Cadets, which helps in functioning the training mechanism well while upholding a high standard of moral qualities in them.

In military, ‘DRILL’ which implies; Discipline by ‘D’, Regimentation by ‘R’, Integrity by ‘I’ and , Loyalty and Leadership by the last two ‘L’s is considered bread and butter of a solder. The Drill Instructor Course at the SLMA is conducted with the aim of producing professionally qualified DIs to the Sri Lanka Army.

After assuming duties as the 37th Commandant of the Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) Brigadier M T I Mahalekam WWV RWP RSP USP ndu psc paid a courtesy visit to General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) on the invitation of the Vice Chancellor, Major General Milinda Peiris RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil (Ind) on 3 August 2023. The Commandant-SLMA was warmly welcomed to KDU on his arrival and a casual interaction between the two heads of the institutions on academic and training disciplines took place at the Vice Chancellor’s Office. The Commandant and the Vice Chancellor exchanged special mementos to mean the longstanding and close relationship between the two military institutions.

On 25th July 2023, the Sri Lanka Military Academy paid her gratitude to the outgoing Deputy Commandant Brigadier WSN Hemarathna RWP RSP psc with a farewell party organized at the Officers' Mess with the participation of the Commandant, Brigadier M T I Mahalekam WWV RWP RSP USP ndu psc as the Guest of Honour, Wing Heads and all other officers. Brigadier Sumal Hemarathna rendered an excellent service to his alma mater as the 12th Deputy Commandant, SLMA from 8th November 2021 and he is to take over another key appointment at the Army Headquarters as the Director - Directorate of Plans in due course.

A felicitation ceremony for Brigadier M T I Mahalekam WWV RWP RSP USP ndu psc of Special Forces who was to assume duties as the 37th Commandant of the Sri Lanka Military Academy was held on 20th July 2023. The new Commandant was respectfully welcomed to the premier military training establishment with a Guard Turnout and then laying of a flower wreath in honour of the fallen war heroes took place at the Monument of Peace. Further, a ceremonial parade with the participation of Officers, NCOs and Officer Cadets, and commanded by the Chief Instructor - Lieutenant Colonel L P Athukorala RSP USP psc of the Special Forces was presented.
