'Exercise Frozen Trout' gets its name from a trout that survives in extremely cold waters, adapting to the harsh climate and terrain. This field exercise is a key component of the training curriculum of the trainees in the second-to-last term, designed to teach conventional warfare tactics in a local setting. During this exercise, officer cadets are tasked to perform different operational roles such as combat team commanders, subordinate commanders etc. in designed warfare scenarios, specially focusing on the practical application of the conventional warfare knowledge in four phases of war, learnt in structured classroom environments.

The Language Day holds a significant place in the Academy’s calendar as one of the major Academy events which allows trainee officer cadets, not only to demonstrate their aesthetic talents but also their linguistic skills on stage with varied genre such as play, drama, skit, song, dance, analysis, recitation etc.

Games Night is one of the fascinating events organized by officer cadets on a date notified in the training programme. In general, all officer cadets of the passing-out Intakes are given with the privilege of entertaining their guests at this event. Also, it is organized with the aim of developing leadership skills such as collaboration, teamwork, cooperation and organizing skills of the officer cadets while providing them with an opportunity to have some entertainment amidst their busy training schedules.

The Security Force Headquarters (Cen) is the regional command of the Sri Lanka Army which is entrusted with the responsibility of operational deployment and command of all Army establishments, located in the Central and Southern parts of the country. On 6 June 2024, the Security Force Commander (Cen), Maj Gen SRB Aluvihare RWP RSP ndu psc paid an official visit to the SLMA upon the request of the newly appointed Commandant, Maj Gen ULJS Perera RSP USP psc.

Educational visits are usually conducted as part of academic programmes or curriculum with the purpose of providing students with opportunities to learn something new or different outside the normal classroom setting. On 5th June 2024, twenty-four officer cadets of Direct Entry 01/2023 course, undergoing training at the Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA), Trincomalee visited the SLMA, Diyatalawa as one of the destinations of their environmental and educational visit.

The annual Study Tour organized for trainee Officer Cadets at the SLMA to the former operational areas, regiments, Security Forces Headquarters, training academies of sister services intends to provide them with a rare opportunity to witness the function service of the establishments located in those areas and to broaden the trainees’ knowledge through such field visits.

A warm welcome was accorded to Maj Gen ULJS Perera RSP USP psc who assumed duties as the 38th Commandant of the Sri Lanka Military Academy on 03 June 2024. The ceremony commenced with a cordial welcome as the new Commandant was greeted with a Guard Turnout and a customary Guard of Honour, held at the Academy’s ‘A’ gate and the Parade Ground. Notably, paying homage to the fallen war heroes of the Sri Lanka Army, the Commandant laid a flower wreath at the War Memorial.

‘DRILL’ plays a significant role in the armed personnel in enhancing their devotedness, duty boundness and discipline. In fact, the term of ‘DRILL’ inculcates the essential attributes such as Discipline, Respect, Integrity, Learning and Leadership. The Drill Instructor Course conducted at the SLMA is designed to indoctrinate military drills within soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army, in order to grow these values within them and to protect the years old military traditions.

‘Ex Seetha Sulang’ is one of the major Field military exercises, which is conducted for the trainees at the SLMA in order to give an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge on conventional warfare tactics and engagements gained during their initial military training in a designed setting to expose them to as close practical situations as possible.

Vesak, is the most prominent Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka, celebrated by engaging with meritorious deeds and religious activities. By marking this special event, the SLMA organized an elegant Vesak day programme under the supervision of Wing Heads. In the evening, a Bodhi Pooja programme was held at the Ella Camp premises, followed by a Vesak Lantern Competition at the Academy main drive. In fact, the Vesak Lantern Competition was organized with the purpose of promoting unity and teamwork among Academy personnel, Officer Cadets while showcasing their hidden artistic talents. The opening ceremony of the Competition was held in the evening of the Vesak Poyaday with the participation of the Overlooking Commandant of the SLMA, Brigadier RRMPNB Bambaradeniya RWP RSP USP psc together with Wing Heads, Officers, NCOs and trainee Officer Cadets. At the prize giving ceremony, the Admin Wing team was awarded with the first prize, the second by the Academic Wing team and the third place was obtained by the HQ team.
