“Ex Frozen Trout”, one of the major field exercises in the cadet curriculum was conducted at Ambewela area. The area for this exercise was especially chosen to train cadets in making decisions and perform under extreme weather conditions. The exercise was on conventional warfare tactics designed to train cadets on the four phases of war; advance, attack, defence and withdrawal.

Colonel A P Wickramasekara USP psc of Sri Lanka Signal Corps took over duties as the new Commanding Officer of the Officer Cadet Wing (OCW) on 05th February 2018. A guard turnout was accorded by the Wing to welcome him and afterwards he paid tribute to the Monument of Peace, a special war memorial erected at SLMA premises to remember the fallen war heroes who were trained at this institute and laid down their lives for the country. Auspiciously and in keeping with religious lines, he commenced duties in the new appointment amidst chanting of pirith by a Buddhist monk.

Sixteen officer cadets of DE II/2017, whose military training commenced on 22nd September 2017, left the Academy on 29th January 2018 after successful completion of a four-month basic training. The certificates awarding ceremony was graced by the Commandant, Brigadier H H A S P K Senaratne as the Chief Guest. The Deputy Commandant, wing heads, company commanders and course officers also attended the event which was held at the Col F Laphir Auditorium on 29th January 2018. The Commandant addressing the officer cadets stated the importance of undergoing basic military training diligently in order to function effectively as officers while maintaining professionalism in their respective fields.

A delegation comprising of an officer, three officer cadets and one JCO arrived at SLMA on 15th January 2018 for a four-day visit. Upon arrival they paid tribute to the “Monument of Peace” erected to remember those who laid down their lives during the war against terrorism in Sri Lanka.

A batch of drill instructors comprising of one officer, six ORs and twenty students from the Sri Lanka Navy visited the Academy on 10th January 2018. The Academy Sergent Major and a few drill instructors warmly welcomed them to the institute. They first paid floral tribute to the Monument of Peace and then watched a presentation on cadet life at the Colonel Fazly Laphir Auditorium. The Academy also made arrangements for them to pay a visit to the Drill Nursery and the Colour Chamber. Prior to their departure they visited the Academy library and the Museum.

The 116th Drill Instructor course commenced its training at SLMA on 8th January 2018. In delivering the opening address, the Commandant welcomed all students and wished them success in following the course which runs for three months. The batch consists of 100 SNCOs representing all regiments of the Army.

The Commandant, addressing the twenty-one ladies of regular lady officer cadet Intake 16, extended a warm welcome to them, and thanked their parents too for sending them to the Army. The Commandant’s address was conducted at the Colonel F Laphir Auditorium on 8 January 2018 in the presence of all wing heads, company and course commanders.

Officer Cadet IDN Madushanka of the Sri Lanka Military Academy bagged the Silver Medal at Asian Youth Powerlifting Championship held in KualaLampur, Malaysia under 94kg weight category.

The Commandant of the Sri Lanka Military Academy Brigadier H H A S P K Senaratne addressed all Officers and Other Ranks separately on 03rd January 2018 marking the new year. He made it a point to extend his appreciations to everyone who contributed to the success of the 92nd Commissioning Parade of the Academy held in December 2017. Further, he laid bare the Academy’s roadmap for way forward in 2018 which would ensure an effective and efficient training environment.
