'Exercise Frozen Trout' gets its name from a trout that survives in extremely cold waters, adapting to the harsh climate and terrain. This field exercise is a key component of the training curriculum of the trainees in the second-to-last term, designed to teach conventional warfare tactics in a local setting. During this exercise, officer cadets are tasked to perform different operational roles such as combat team commanders, subordinate commanders etc. in designed warfare scenarios, specially focusing on the practical application of the conventional warfare knowledge in four phases of war, learnt in structured classroom environments.
The exercise took place from June 23 to June 29, 2024, in Ambewela, involving 249 officer cadets from Intake 93B, Intake SC 21 and Intake SC 22. During this field exercise, they were able to gain practical experience and exposure in the four phases of war: advance, attack, defence and withdrawal in Combat team level. Additionally, the trainees were educated on planning operations, types of patrols including reconnaissance and fighting, laying ambushes, launching deliberate and quick attacks, counter attack and counter penetration etc. On June 28, Major General ULJS Perera RSP USP psc, the Commandant visited the exercise area to inspect the conduct of the field exercise and to observe the orders delivered for the following day final attack.
