Social dances at present are one of the most popular art which is performed in social functions and contexts for enjoyment, socialisation, recreation and health.
As a concept of the present Commandant of the Military Academy, Major General Buddhika Perera RWP USP ndu psc, a social dancing programme comprising of popular dancing styles was introduced to the Officers of the Sri Lanka Military Academy on 17 May 2023 and its first session was held at the Officers’ Mess with the participation of all the lady and gentleman officers of the Academy in line with regular training day programme conducted every Wednesday.
At the outset, the Commandant set the scene for the initial dancing session with a brief introduction to social dancing, its significance to a military officer and the awesome benefits of this art. Maj Niwanka Peiris and Capt Ravindra Tammita from the Sri Lanka Signal Corps as the resource personnel taught and guided the participants along the basic dancing styles and techniques of Cha Cha dance. The session seemingly caught the participants’ heed and rose their enthusiasm to love the art of dancing. The first social dancing session reached its conclusion with a special dinner at the Mess.
