1. The Bachelors’ degree programme in military studies is a full time degree course conducted by the Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA), Diyatalawa in collaboration with the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), Ratmalana for the officer cadets of the Sri Lanka Army Regular Force. The course is of three year duration and consists of lectures, practical training, field exercises and research work.

2. Upon successful completion of the programme of studies, the officer cadets are commissioned as Second Lieutenants and awarded a Bachelors' Degree in Military Studies (BSc in Military Studies) by the KDU. Subsequently, they are posted to their respective regiments to perform their duties.

3. The BSc (Military Studies) degree programme aims at producing officer cadets with a broader knowledge on military science, leadership skills and academic disciplines, so that they will be able to perform outstandingly in their military career.

DURATION

4. The two year and nine month degree programme consists of six semesters of 16 –20 weeks each.

TRAINING ESTABLISHMENT

5. It is mandatory for all candidates (officer cadets) to undergo the first five semesters of training at SLMA. This contains 60% of military training and 40% of academic teaching. As commissioned officers, they are required to complete the sixth semester at three other designated military training institutions; Army Training School (ATS) Maduruoya, Infantry Training Centre (ITC) Minneriya and Commando Regiment Training School (CRTS) Uva Kudaoya.

LEARNING OUTCOME

6. The objectives of the programme are as follows:

     a.   To equip the officer cadets with the knowledge of military science and skills required for junior leaders.

     b.  To inculcate and enhance military leadership skills required by an army officer.

     c.  To lay an academic foundation required for a professional officer.

GRADUATE PROFILE

7. The graduates will have the proficiency in military science, military leadership, academic knowledge and languages in order to perform well in their military career with professional development and career progress. Other than that, they will be able to perform on a par with professionals in other fields.

8. Credit Rating - A module is given a credit value based on the number of contact periods, practical training and field training required to complete the particular module. A credit is a time based quantitative measure used in calculating the grade point average. Calculation of credit rating is done as follows:

     a.   15 hours of lectures = 01 credit

     b.  45 hours of practical training = 01 credit

     c.  60 hours of field training = 01 credit

9. Semester End Examinations - Officer cadets should sit for the stipulated theory/practical examinations in each subject before the end of the particular semester. They are required to obtain minimum of 45% in each subject with the required officer quality and work grade marks to get through the semester examination. Those who fail in any subject (less than 45%) will be given a chance to appear for a retest. If such officer cadets fail in the retest too, they will be subjected to relegation to the next junior intake (See the criteria for relegation). In retest, maximum of 45% score is considered for assessments.

GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA) SYSTEM AND AWARDING OF CLASSES

10. The GPA will be calculated by taking the value of the GP for each course unit obtained by the student throughout the degree programme. This will be multiplied by the number of credits awarded for each course unit to calculate the total value. Then, the sum will be divided by the total number of credits obtained. Followings are some of the common rules applied for BSc (Military Studies) degree programme at SLMA:

     a.    GPA Course Units - GPA Course Units are those course units that have GPA credits. Such course units are considered for the calculation of SGPA, YGPA and FGPA.

     b.  MGPA Course Units - MGPA Course Units are those course units that have MGPA credits. Such course units are considered for the calculation of SGPA,      YGPA and FGPA.

     c.   NGPA Course Units - NGPA Course Units are those course units that have NGPA credits. Such course units are not considered for the calculation of      SGPA, YGPA and FGPA.

12. SELECTION CRITERIA

Male Officer Cadets

Should be an unmarried citizen of Sri Lanka

GCE (O/L) Examination - Six (06) passes at one sitting Credit passes in any four (04) subjects including English Language and a simple passes for Mathematics and Sinhala or Tamil in the GCE (O/L) Examination in not more than two (02) sittings GCE (A/L) Examination - Three (03) passes in GCE (A/L) at one sitting and obtain 30% marks for General Test not more than three sittings

Age - Between 18 - 22 years as on the date of enlistment Height - 5’ 6” Chest - 32” Weight - 50Kg

Commissioned Officers will be entitled to fringe benefits covering salaries, transport,uniforms, medical, food and accommodation. Commissioned officers will also have opportunities of serving in UN Peace Keeping Missions abroad and following overseas advanced courses in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, USA, UK etc.
