MILITARY FIELD EXERCISES

Exercise Ice Break   A Tactical Exercise without Troops (TEWT) which encompasses the techniques of a platoon attack. The objectives of the exercise are as follows:

  • Combat appreciation process
  • Tactics, techniques and procedures of an attack
  • Employment of Platoon Support Weapons

Exercise Knock Out   This is a tactical field exercise which encompasses the application of a day attack at platoon level.

Exercise Nightmare   This is also a tactical exercise which encompasses the application of a night attack.

  

Exercise Great Wall   A TEWT designed to teach planning and setting of defence at platoon level while achieving the following objectives:

  • Combat appreciation process
  • Setting of defence
  • Setting of platoon support weapons
  • Obstacle plan
  • Early warning alarms

Exercise Rat Trap   This is another tactical exercise that rehearses the teaching of ambush techniques at platoon level to achieve the following:

  • The mechanism of planning, preparation and conduct of a day/night ambush
  • To acquire the basic knowledge on how to choose an ambush site and setting of platoon support weapons
  • The employment of all groups in an ambush, command and control of groups within the ambush site
  • To acquire the basic knowledge on admin arrangements of an ambush

Exercise Fox Hunt   This is a conventional platoon level exercise to train second-term officer cadets in planning, preparation and conduct of fighting / reconnaissance patrols and raids.

Exercise Seetha Sulang   This is a tactical exercise conducted in the Field Firing Range (FFR) which incorporates the four phases of war at platoon level aiming to train officer cadets in tactical employment of an infantry platoon with special reference to basic tactics. The following objectives are to be achieved during the exercise:

  • The mechanism and conduct of advance
  • The conduct of quick attack
  • Setting of a defence at platoon level (Application of theories in setting and positioning of platoon support weapons, trenches and security alarms on the ground)
  • The occupation, conduct and work routine in defence
  • The conduct of a deliberate attack
  • The march and conduct of withdrawal

Exercise Mega Clout   This is a TEWT that encompasses the application of Combat Team (CT) level attack. The aim of the exercise is to train officer cadets to plan an attack at CT level and special emphasis is drawn on achieving the following objectives:

  • Combat appreciation process
  • Employment of support arms and support weapons
  • Tactics, techniques and procedures of an attack

Exercise Naughty Night   This is a tactical exercise which encompasses the application of night attack at CT level.

Exercise Trench Coat   This field exercise is a TEWT to practice the application of concepts of defence at CT level.

Exercise Reach-Out   It is a Sand Model Discussion (SMD) which encompasses the application of the principles of advance at CT level in a conventional setting.

Exercise Master Option   This SMD involves the teaching of withdrawal planning and conducting of withdrawal at CT level. The main objectives of the exercise are:

  • Combat appreciation process
  • Planning of withdrawal at CT level
  • Employment of support arms and support weapons
  • Conduct and procedures of withdrawal at CT level

Exercise Bronze Hammer   This is an SMD conducted at CT level within the framework of a Battle Group (BG). The exercise tests officer cadets’ knowledge on planning and operations related to four phases of war in conventional setting.

Exercise Frozen Trout   Conventional CT level exercise for third term officer cadets to acquire a sound theoretical and practical knowledge on the following aspects:

  • Advance
  • Attack
  • Defence
  • Withdrawal
  • Covering troops battle as a part of defence and withdrawal
  • Patrol /Ambush /Observation Points and Listening Points

  

Exercise Silver Hammer   This is an Indoor Exercise (IE) conducted prior to the exercise, Scorpion. Officer Cadets are given a situation similar to that of exercise Scorpion enabling them to be acclimatized with exercise requirements. This exercise is conducted at platoon level within a framework of a Company.

Exercise Scorpion   A platoon and detachment level exercise within the framework of a Company. During the exercise, Officer Cadets will be trained and tested on effective employment of a platoon and a company in Internal Security Operations.

Exercise Wanabambara   This is scheduled to be conducted in general areas of Omanugala Forest Reserve, Baron’s Cap Forest Reserve, Walamandiya, Nelugala and Aralaganwila. This field exercise encompasses the theories and practice of Counter Insurgency (COIN) Operations in jungle and rural environments. Officer Cadets are made to live in a typical and realistic jungle base and are taught to operate in a stimulated battle scenario.

  

OTHER EXERCISES

Exercise Novice Pen   The exercise “Novice Pen” is a Service Writing exercise designed to improve letter writing skills of officer cadets. It is essential for them to know the basics of Service Writing, which help them pen down their thoughts on paper cleverly and clearly while maintaining uniformity in military correspondence. The exercise is conducted as an individual exercise in the classroom.

Exercise Grave Digger   This is a platoon level defence position exercise designed within the framework of a company defence to train officer cadets in constructing a deliberate defence.

Exercise Map Jotter   This is an individual map marking exercise designed to practice the preparation of maps with military symbols.

Exercise Map Blotter   This is an individual Map Exercise (MAP EX) designed to exercise skills in marking maps with military symbols. The prime objective of this exercise is to make officer cadets conversant in the application of correct military symbols in COIN situations.

Exercise Master Writer   This exercise aims at practicing various types of service letters. It is an essential requirement for officer cadets to know exactly how to draft various types of letters in accordance with rules and conventions of Service Writing.

Exercise Cat’s Eye   This is a day exercise which aims to practice stalking.

Exercise Owl Watch   This is a night exercise on handling of Night Vision Devices (NVDs) and it gives officer cadets adequate practice in handling NVDs. The objective of the exercise is to impart a sound knowledge on the following aspects:

  • Use of NVDs
  • Safety precautions for eyes
  • Scanning techniques
  • Safety precautions of NVDs

Exercise Web and Night Watchman   Day and night board marches aim to impart adequate practice on handling of compasses.

Exercise Long Journey   This is a one day navigational exercise which aims to train officer cadets on map reading and navigational skills. The following objectives are to be achieved during the exercise:

  • Use of compass
  • Use of service protractor
  • Reading a map
  • Day time navigation

Exercise Novice Judge   This is an exercise on Court of Inquiry (C of I) procedures, which encompass the techniques C of I.

Exercise Master Judge   This is a C of I exercise which encompasses the application of the C of I procedures to train officer cadets on conducting of C of I. The following objectives are to be achieved by the end of the exercise:

  • Obtaining relevant details/information
  • Gathering evidence
  • Finding/selecting observations
  • Deriving of decisions from observations
  • Completing the C of I as per the C of I regulations

Exercise March Fast   This is a 10 km speed march to improve the following qualities within officer cadets:

  • March Discipline.
  • Endurance.
  • Cohesiveness.

Exercise Sand Carrier   This is a 16 km rack sack march to develop endurance within trainee officer cadets.

Exercise Cat Walk   This field exercise is a 35 km speed march conducted in general areas of Wellawaya, Ella, Bandarawela and Diyatalawa. Its objective is to improve the qualities such as march-discipline, endurance, cohesiveness and leadership.

Exercise Road Runner   This is a 50 km route march conducted within a day to practice officer cadets in long distance route marches.

Exercise Samanala Tharanaya   A non-tactical exercise conducted to encourage officer cadets on adventure training. The aim of the exercise is to develop individual and collective spirit of adventure amongst officer cadets while developing:

  • Physical and mental stamina.
  • An intimate knowledge of training and environment.
  • Leadership qualities.

Exercise Initiative   An initiative/leadership exercise conducted in general areas of Haldummulla, Wellawaya, Badulla and the following objectives are to be met by officer cadets during the exercise:

  • Ability to face challenges and react to varying situations.
  • Ability to lead others through leadership skills. Use of initiative to achieve set goals.

Exercise Chit Chat   A signal communication training exercise to practice drills/procedures when communicating via radio sets.

Exercise Cross Talk   This is another signal communication exercise conducted at the Polo Grounds. The objectives of the exercise are to give a fair knowledge on calling and answering procedures, maintaining a radio log and radio discipline while practicing of voice procedures.

Exercise Paper Chase   Exercise Paper Chase is another signal communication exercise conducted at Polo Grounds.
