BRIGADIER THUSITHA BANDARA ASSUMES DUTIES AS THE 40TH COMMANDANT OF THE SRI LANKA MILITARY ACADEMY

Brigadier M M Thusitha Bandara USP AUSWC psc formally assumed duties as the 40th Commandant of the Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) on 06 January 2026, marking a significant milestone in the Academy’s distinguished history.

A ceremonial welcome was accorded to the newly appointed Commandant, commencing with a Guard Turnout at the Academy ‘A’ Gate, followed by a formal Guard of Honour. In solemn tribute to the fallen heroes who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation, Brigadier Thusitha Bandara laid a wreath at the War Memorial, reaffirming the Academy’s enduring respect for its proud legacy and traditions.

Subsequently, the Commandant proceeded to his office to officially assume duties in accordance with Buddhist religious observances, symbolising an auspicious beginning to his tenure and a renewed commitment to service and leadership.

Addressing all ranks during his Troop Address at the Sino–Lanka Friendship Auditorium, Brigadier Thusitha Bandara underscored the collective responsibility of officers, non-commissioned officers, other ranks, and civilian staff in achieving the Academy’s mission. He emphasised the centrality of dedicated service, unwavering discipline, and professional excellence in shaping competent, resilient, and future-ready military leaders. The Commandant further highlighted the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and personal fulfilment, irrespective of rank or appointment, as a foundation for effective service and institutional cohesion.

In keeping with long-standing SLMA tradition, a formal tea party was hosted at the Gymnasium in honour of the new Commandant. The day’s proceedings concluded with a welcoming reception and interactive session at the Officers’ Mess, fostering camaraderie and open engagement between the Commandant and Academy personnel.

The occasion was attended by the Deputy Commandant, Wing Heads, senior officers, officers, non-commissioned officers, and selected Officer Cadets, symbolising unity of purpose and collective resolve as the Sri Lanka Military Academy enters a new chapter under its 40th Commandant.
