BIDDING FAREWELL TO THE 39TH COMMANDANT

In honour of the 39th outgoing Commandant, Major General M J R S Medagoda RSP USP ndc psc IG, the Sri Lanka Military Academy organised a dignified and memorable farewell ceremony on 5 January 2026, paying tribute to his distinguished leadership and dedicated service.

The day’s proceedings commenced in the morning with a Guard Turnout, followed by a wreath-laying at the War Memorial and a Guard of Honour. Addressing the parade, the outgoing Commandant expressed his sincere appreciation to all ranks for their unwavering commitment and collective efforts in achieving the Academy’s milestones during his tenure most notably, the successful conduct of the historic 100th Commissioning Parade. As a lasting symbol of his tenure, Major General Medagoda planted an Ironwood sapling beside the Academy Headquarters.

Thereafter, the Commandant participated in the handing-over formalities at his office, after which he unveiled his photo in the Past Commandants’ Photo Board. A group photograph was subsequently taken in front of the Headquarters Complex. A traditional tea party, hosted by all ranks of the Academy, followed succeeded by a special luncheon at the Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess in his honour. His departure was marked with a traditional Street Line through the main gate, where the Academy personnel gathered to extend their heartfelt blessings and best wishes for his future endeavours.

In the evening, a farewell party was held at the Officers’ Mess, attended by all Officers of the Academy together with Mrs Dilrukshi Medagoda. On this occasion, the exemplary service of Major General Medagoda as the 39th Commandant of the SLMA was deeply appreciated by the Deputy Commandant during his farewell speech. Major General Medagoda shared reflections on his military journey and the honour of serving in such a prestigious appointment. As a token of gratitude, he was presented with a special memento and later hosted to a sumptuous dinner. Mrs Medagoda was also presented with a special gift, in recognition of her steadfast support and strength throughout more than 34 years of the Commandant’s distinguished military career. Prior to his departure, Major General Medagoda penned his reflections on his tenure in the Visitors’ Book, leaving behind words of guidance and inspiration.
