On 1st January 2025, a flag hoisting ceremony was conducted at the SLMA marking the first working day of the year. During the event, the National Flag and the SLMA Flag were hoisted by the Deputy Commandant and the Commanding Officer of the Administrative Wing, respectively. The ceremony was attended by a section of officers and soldiers serving at SLMA. Following the flag hoisting, the government’s pledge was read aloud by the Adjutant, with all attendees reciting it afterward. Subsequently, the troops viewed the President’s address on the government’s "Clean Sri Lanka" national initiative, with the objective of making a fruitful transformation in moral, environmental and social aspects of communities.
In aligning with the "Clean Sri Lanka" initiative, SLMA has taken proactive steps to support sustainable practices. Nearly a month prior, under the leadership of the Commandant, a waste management programme was launched. As part of this programme, the Eco Bricks project was introduced, and it has been progressing successfully. This initiative focuses on recycling and repurposing non-biodegradable waste into eco-friendly building materials.
Additionally, the Commandant spearheaded the establishment of an animal shelter within the camp premises. The shelter, named "Happy Home," provides care and refuge for stray dogs previously found within the camp. This compassionate initiative has proven highly successful, with three puppies already adopted from the shelter.
Further extending its efforts, SLMA has collaborated with local authorities to address the issue of stray cattle in the Diyatalawa area. In a unique and culturally sensitive approach, these cattle are being relocated to Thirukkovil, where they are entrusted to Hindu communities who venerate and care for them. This programme is supported by a Buddhist monk who provides financial backing through a dedicated foundation.
SLMA is proud to announce its alignment with the government’s "Clean Sri Lanka" initiative through these impactful projects. These efforts not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also foster goodwill and cooperation within the community.
