The 74th Independence Day carried a significance that a record number of Officers and Other Ranks were received their promotions to their next rank. The jubilant moment was intensified by promoting 7 Senior Brigadiers to the rank of Major General. The fortune was stepped at the military academy, Diyatalawa as the commandant of SLMA, Brigadier WWHRRVMNDKB Niyangoda RWP RSP USP ndu psc received his promotion from the the President upon the recommendations of Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army.
Military tradition of the academy involves conduct of a felicitating ceremony to treasure the achievement of her son and leader. On 7 February 2022, a ceremonial Cavalcade led by stallions escorted the two- star general Nalinda Niyangoda RWP RSP USP ndu psc and a Guard Turnout by troops of the Armoured Corps in pride of the regiment was given at the main entrance. At the arrival, floral wreath was placed on the foot of the ‘Monument of Peace’ in commemoration of the fallen warriors. In accord with military rituals, the Guard of Honor comprised of Colours Squad, two officers and 48 officer cadets was conducted as a mark of respect to his magnificent achievement in service. Tree plantation, a symbol of new life and growth was done up by planting an “Ironwood” sapling at the new headquarters complex by the Commandant. By addressing the troops of the academy, the Commandant stressed that all ranks in military hierarchy must always be abid by the responsibility of taking care each other as the existence of an army retains with collective efforts beyond individual aspirations. A traditional tea party was hosted for Maj General Nalinda Niyangoda in cerebration of this special moment where congratulations and well wishes of all ranks were showered upon the newly promoted Commandant for a successful military career ahead of him.
