As per the conceptual guidanceof the Commander, Security Forces (East) Major General Prasanna Gunaratne RSP ndu psc IG, SFHQ (East) has taken an initiative to teach each other’s languages to Sinhala and Tamil speaking students in the East.The first phase of the initiative started off a month ago with the starting of Tamil Language Course for Sinhala Students at Nelumwewa Maha Vidyalaya, Welikanda. The second phase started off on 30th December 2023 at R.K.M Vidyalaya Kokadichole with the participation of 103 students from R.K.M Vidyalaya and Muthalaikudha Maha Vidyalaya, Kokadichole. These 103 students will learn Sinhala Language for a period of 6 months starting from January 2024.

In a unique and unprecedented initiative taken by Commander Security Forces (East) Major General Prasanna Gunaratne RSP ndu psc IG; 23 Infantry Division has conducted a groundbreaking leadership training program for school prefects from Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim backgrounds selected from 11 schools within the Security Forces (East) AOR. The basic objective of this program is to draw inspiration from military principles to instill discipline, teamwork, and effective leadership skills among young children in the area. Further, it is objected to help identify strengths and weaknesses of students, and improve effective communication skills among others.

Accordingly, 200 students from Nelumwewa Maha Vidyalaya and Sinhapura Maha Vidyalaya have been selected to attend a Tamil language programme for a period of one year. The Opening Ceremony of the programme was held on 21 November 2023 at Nelumwewa Maha Vidyalaya. The Commander Security Forces (East) Major General Prasanna Gunaratne graced the occasion as the chief guest accompanied by Major General KVNP Premaratne RSP USP psc, General Officer Commanding - 23 Infantry Division.
