The latest Special Intensive Care Unit (SICU), the second of its kind, initiated by the Ministry of Health at the Colombo East Base Hospital at Mulleriyawa was opened this morning (21), in an effort to further supplement the national health care infrastructure, in the face of looming threat of COVID-19. At present, 8 Wards with 150 beds for exclusive treatment of COVID-19 patients are functional and the new SICU remained a long-felt requirement of this Colombo East Hospital.

An old garment factory building, owned by Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) Bus Depot at Badulla was improvised as an Intermediate Care Center (ICC) for COVIF-19 infectees by the Army and vested it in health authorities on Sunday (23).

The Sri Lanka Army, throwing its full weight behind as 'health providers', quite identical to the way they committed themselves to the elimination of terrorism as 'Defenders of the Nation' are now nearing completion of manufacture/provision of record 20,000 beds and island-wide erection of more than 112 Army-improvised Intermediate Care Centres (ICCs), in addition to continuing conduct of Quarantine Centres and assistance to vaccination units.

The Security Force HQ -Wanni (SFHQ-W), in line with instructions given by Head, NOCPCO, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, General Shavendra Silva has made improvised arrangements in Mannar, Vavuniya and Wahamalgollewa to receive COVID-19 patients in the event of any increase of patients in the region.

Under the close supervision of the Chief Signal Officer of the Sri Lanka Army and the Director Information Technology, troops of 11 Sri Lanka Signals Corps are currently providing technical expertise and human resources for computerizing of biometric data of the vaccination process in Gampaha and Kalutara districts while simultaneously contributing to the E-Channeling vaccination process which greatly relieved large sections of the population in a short period of time.

As of this morning (21), a total of 3,443 more persons were confirmed positive to COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. 2 Sri Lankan expatriates and 3,441 of those positive cases are locally-identified ones, including the majority 822 from Gampaha District, 674 from Colombo and, 287 from Kalutara District and 1,658 from different other Districts, states the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO).

In order to be prepared for any increase of COVID-19 patients in the Kilinochchi region , the Security Force HQ-Kilinochchi completed conversion of the 2nd and 3rd Intermediate Care Centres (ICCs) by Tuesday (19) as per guidelines given by General Shavendra Silva, Head, NOCPCO, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army and under the guidance of Major General Harendra Ranasinghe, Commander, Security Forces Kilinochchi and District Coordinating Officer for COVID-19 Prevention in Kilinochchi District.

"The COVID-19 vaccination project is to be expanded covering more vulnerable regions/districts with high numbers of infectees after identifying the most sensitive and wanted areas as more and more vaccine stocks are set to arrive in the country. HE the President has been assured a stock of 500,000 more vaccines as a donation after the Chinese Ambassador in Sri Lanka had a meeting with the President. The inoculation of Sputnik jabs is to be completed by tomorrow and the injection of Cinnopharm vaccine was finished by yesterday," so remarked General Shavendra Silva, Head, NOCPCO, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army attending one more NOCPCO Task Force meeting on Wednesday (20).
