Mannar & Wanni Troops-Converted ICCs Ready for New Cases

The Security Force HQ -Wanni (SFHQ-W), in line with instructions given by Head, NOCPCO, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, General Shavendra Silva has made improvised arrangements in Mannar, Vavuniya and Wahamalgollewa to receive COVID-19 patients in the event of any increase of patients in the region.

On the instructions of Major General Hemantha Bandara, Commander, SF-Wanni, the General Officer Commanding, 54 Division in Mannar with his troops with the coordination of the District Secretary for Mannar converted an unused building at Turkey City Private College in Mannar to function as an Intermediate Care Centre (ICC) where 120 persons can be accommodated.

Improvisations were carried out by troops of the 7 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment under the supervision of the Commander, 543 Brigade, Brigadier Assala Arachchi within six days and formally vested it in the Mannar Hospital authorities.

Meanwhile, 2 Corps of Engineer Service Regiment troops under the supervision of the Commander of the 562 Brigade, Brigadier Senaka Premawansa as instructed by the GOC, 56 Division and the Wanni Commander in close coordination with the Vavuniya District Secretary within six days converted the Economic Trade Center in Vavuniya to serve as an ICC which can facilitate 200 persons in the event of any emergency need.

The improvised ICC was officially vested in health authorities at Vavuniya Hospital on 12 May 2021.

In the meantime, 21 Division of the SFHQ-Wanni offering its own premises converted the 2 Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps-run factory at Wahamalgollewa as an ICC with the coordination of the Commander, Forward Maintenance Area (North Central). The place is able to facilitate 250 persons.

Troops of the 2 Corps Engineer Service Regiment under the supervision of the Commander 211 Brigade, Brigadier Saman Senaratne completed the task within 6 days and left it to the administration of the Anuradhapura Hospital on 14 May 2021.
