The military is the first to respond during any humanitarian relief effort when there is a natural disasters situation in this island nation. Be it the Tsunami, floods, landslides or any other emergency, tremendous relief measures have piloted by the military in the past. The adverse weather caused floods that has struck several regions in the island recently have underscored the need to adopt a multi-dimensional approach for disaster management. Within the ambit of this approach, the military has played a pivotal and potent role as the first to respond. Hence, the continuous training on disaster management (Search and Rescue) is utmost important and training programmes are the key to success in maintaining readiness.

Conceiving intention of winning the heart and mind of civil society for the Sri Lanka Army, 144 Infantry Brigade initiated a community project with the assistance of the troops of 2 (V) Sri Lanka Light Infantry for distribution of dry ration packs among 35 selected low income families in Kotikawaththa area on 26 August 2023.

Responding to the shortage of air beds in the teaching hospital Kurunegala,as per the guidance of the Commander Security Forces Headquarters (West) Major General U. D. Wijesekara RWP RSP USP rcds psc and the Commander 14 Infantry Division Brigadier K. A. W. N. H. Bandaranayake USP ,the Commander 143 infantry Brigade with the assistance of 1 Sri Lanka National Guard ,initiated a project providing 10 air beds with contribution of some generous donors on 21 August 2023.

On 22nd August 2023, a devastating fire broke out in the Koskale - Opatha forest area, posing a severe threat to the environment and nearby areas. In response, 611 Infantry Brigade swiftly dispatched around 60 troops from the 8 Battalion Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment to collaborate with the police in extinguishing the fire and preventing further damage.

At around evening hours on 17 August 2023, the Water Care Technology Chemical factory in the Homagama Industrial Estate was engulfed in a major fire, prompting the Army to step in and assist the firefighters in controlling the blaze.

On 17 August 2023, the 8 Battalion Gemunu Watch troops of 611 Infantry Brigade under 61 Infantry Division of Security Forces (West) quickly responded to a request from the Divisional Secretariat- Kalthota to douse a bush fire that had been spreading rapidly in the Rajawaka Forest Reserve in the Kongahamankada, Kalthota area.

One officer and 25 Other Ranks from 8 Battalion of Sri Lanka Light Infantry under 141 Infantry Brigade of Security Forces (West) dedicated in dousing a forest fire that broke out in the Danawkanda, Keragala in general area Dompe, on 14 August 2023. Their quick response and effective containment strategy successfully prevented the fire from spreading further and causing more damage.
