Security Forces (West) spreads over 4 administrative provinces (Western Province, Southern Province less Hambantota District, North Western Province and Sabaragamuwa Province) which includes 09 x Districts (Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Ratnapura, Kegalle) covered with a total land area of 19473 sq km. A coastal area stretches 352 km also comes under the area of responsibility (AOR) of this headquarters (HQ) starting from Modaragammaru (North of Kudiramale) to Dikwella.
As per the Army Headquarters directions, AOR of this HQ has been divided in to 3 x major parts in line with the administrative zones and those are placed under command to 3 x Infantry Division (Inf Div);
- 14 Inf Div consist with 4 x Infantry Brigades (Inf Bde) those are 141 Inf Bde, 142 Inf Bde, 143 Inf Bde and 144 Inf Bde.
- 16 Inf Div consist with 3 x Inf Bde which are 161 Inf Bde, 162 Inf Bde, 163 Inf Bde.
- 57 Inf Div consist with 3 x Inf Bde which are 571 Inf Bde, 572 Inf Bde, 573 Inf Bde.
Furthermore, 20 Infantry Battalions are deployed in the AOR under command to 10 x Inf Bde and 13 x affiliate battalion are also deployed directly under command to this HQ.
