The Army War College, Buttala, hosted a guest lecture on “Leadership Challenges” on Friday, 22 May 2026, delivered by Major General W B M K G K Weerasekara WWV RWP RSP USP AUSWC psc, a highly decorated Senior Officer, currently serving as Colonel of the Regiment Special Forces and General Officer Commanding of 22 Infantry Division of the Sri Lanka Army.

Student Officers of Senior Command Course 17 (SCC 17) and Junior Command Course 36 (JCC 36), currently undergoing training at the Army War College (AWC), Buttala, conducted an educational study visit to the Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA), Diyatalawa on 16 May 2026. The visiting delegation comprised 42 Student Officers from SCC 17 and 78 Student Officers from JCC 36. The visit was organised in line with the course curriculum with the objective of enhancing and refreshing the Officers’ knowledge on essential military drills and procedures practiced within the Sri Lanka Army.

A total of 117 Student Officers from the Senior Command Course 17 and the Junior Command Course 36 participated. Consistent with Army War College practice, the event was planned and executed by the Student Officers to provide a break from academic routine while deepening their understanding of the religious and historical significance of Kataragama, a major multi-religious destination and a tourist site in the vicinity.

The Army War College (AWC) in Buttala, hosted a distinguished graduation ceremony for the first trimester of 2026 on 10 April 2026, at the AWC Auditorium. A total of 143 Student Officers successfully completed Senior Command Course No 16 (SCC 16) and Junior Command Course No 35 (JCC 35), marking a significant milestone in their military careers. Major General DKRN Silva RSP USP psc, Commandant of the AWC, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. His endorsement of the graduation register served as a formal testament to the achievements of the graduates, celebrating their hard work, dedication and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Exercise ‘Friendly Force’, a Counterinsurgency (COIN) exercise in the course curriculum, was successfully conducted for 10 days at the college premises as part of the training programme for Student Officers of JCC 35. The exercise was designed to enhance the Student Officers’ knowledge on insurgency and the conduct of Counterinsurgency operations at battalion level within a brigade operational environment.
