SAPPERS’ CRICKET GROUND MODERNIZED WITH NEW INFRASTRUCTURE FACILITIES

The Opening Ceremony of newly constructed Digital Score Board and the Open Restaurant at the Pavilion, was held on 17 May 2024 at the Sapper Cricket Ground – Mattegoda. The highlights of the events were unveiling of the newly constructed Score Board and Open Restaurant at the Sappers Cricket Ground, a significant upgrade from the previous system.

These infrastructure developments were executed under the guidance and declared opened by the Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force and the Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers, Major General M K Jayawardena RSP VSV USP ndu with participation of serving and retired Senior Officers and Officers of the Corps.

These developments are testaments to Sappers commitment to improving the Sports infrastructure. It not only modernizes the Sappers’ Cricket, but also brings on par with international standards.

The event was culminated with a friendly T20 Cricket match held between Serving Sapper Officers and Retired Sapper Officers. Retired Sapper Officers team won the toss and Serving Sappers Officers team managed to curtail them for 129 runs for 5 wickets. Serving Sapper Officers team chased the target scoring 133 runs for 1 wicket in 13 overs.

The Colonel Commandant gave away the trophies for following players who performed well in the match.

Man of the Match: Major General M P K Madurapperuma RSP USP psc (Serving Sapper Officers team) - 52 runs from 30 balls.

Best Batsman: Major General J C Gamage (Rtd) ndc psc (Retired Sapper Officers team) – 40 runs from 49 balls.

Best Bowler: Lt Col K K P Pussewala RSP SLE (Serving Sapper Officers team) – 03 Overs-29 Runs-02 Wickets.
