SRI LANKA’S FIRST DOUBLE SQUASH COURT DECLARED OPENED BY MAJOR GENERAL JAGATH GUNAWARDANE AT THE END OF THE INTER REGIMENT SQUASH TOURNAMENT 2020

Turning a new page of Sri Lankan Squash history, Sri Lanka’s first Double Squash Court declared opened by the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and Colonel Commandant, Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers Major General Jagath Gunawardena, at the end of the Inter Regiment Squash tournament 2020. The tournament was held for second consecutive year organized by 16 Workshop Regiment SLE on 25, 26, 27 and finals were played on 28 August 2020 at Sappers’ Squash Court - Mattegoda. Senior officers and Officers/ Soldiers from regiments were participated under following categories.

• Officers’ Open Event
• Men’s Open Event
• Officers’ Men Novices Event
• Officers’ Women Novices Event
• Men’s Novices Event
• Women’s Novices Event
• Men’s Team Open Event
• Women’s Team Novices Event

The Awarding Ceremony was conducted on 15 September 2020 at the Sappers’ Leisure Bay premises. Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and Colonel Commandant, Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers Major General Jagath Gunawardena was graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. At the beginning of the event, newly constructed Sri Lanka’s first Double Squash Court declared opened by the Chief Guest with the blessings of Buddhist monks. As a concept of Major General Jagath Gunawardane, under the supervision of Commander Engineer Brigade and the chairman of Army Squash committee, Brigadier Pradeep Gunawardane the double Squash court was built by the troops of 15 (V) SLE. To mark the opening, Commander Engineer Brigade, Brigadier Pradeep Gunawardana and Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Sarath Jayawardhana played a friendly match. Thereafter four top ranked National Squash players played an exhibition match and audience was stunned by there performances.

After the exhibition match Awarding ceremony of Inter Regiment Squash Championship 2020 was conducted and Additional Director DHQC Project Management Unit, Major General Kuma Peiris, Chief Field Engineer, Major General Nihal Amarasekara and the Chief Guest, Major General Jagath Gunawardane presented the Medals, Certificates and Trophies to the winners.

Finally, Commanding Officer 16 Workshop Regiment SLE, Lieutenant Colonel Dilruk Sugathadasa presented a Drawing to the Chief Guest, Major General Jagath Gunawardane, as a token of appreciation and marked the completion of successful tournament.
