Cricket is a sport that unites people of different ages and abilities. However, not all people have access to cricket grounds that are suitable for their physical conditions. Wheelchair cricket is a modified version of cricket that is played by individuals who use wheelchairs due to mobility impairments. This sport provides them with an opportunity to showcase their skills and abilities on the field. However, many wheelchair cricket associations struggle to find suitable grounds to practice and play their matches. This is where the provision of free cricket grounds can make a significant difference.
A series of wheel chair cricket matches was held on 25 & 26 April 2023 at the Sappers’ Cricket Stadium – Mattegoda in order to select the best players to Sri Lanka Wheel Chair Cricket Team by the Sri Lankan Wheelchair Cricket Association. Providing the free booking of the Sappers’ Cricket Stadium – Mattegoda for Sri Lankan Wheelchair Cricket Association is a positive step taken by the Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers Major General MK Jayawardena RSP VSV USP ndu, towards creating an inclusive society that values diversity and accessibility. He is in view that everyone should have the opportunity to participate in sports, regardless of their physical abilities.
