Major General Lanka Amarapala Triumphs in Over 50 Category, Captain Eranga Liyanagamage Seizes Officers Open Title, and Sapper Players Secure Third Place in Army Inter Regiment Squash Championship 2023

The Army Inter Regiment Squash Championship concluded on Wednesday (09) at the Home of Sappers, Mattegoda Squash Court. Over the course of ten intense days, players from 13 different regiments showcased their unparalleled skill and determination, vying for supremacy across 11 competitive events.

The championship's final day witnessed a vibrant display of athleticism and camaraderie. The chief guest, Major General Lanka Amarapala, the Chief Field Engineer of the Sri Lanka Army and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Army Squash Committee, added to the event's grandeur by gracing the awarding ceremony.

Accompanied by a distinguished assembly, including Major General Shewanth Kulathunga, General Officer Commanding, Engineers Division, and Brigadier Manoj Madurapperuma, Centre Commandant, Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers, Brigadier Nadeeka Kulasekara, Vice Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Squash Committee, Colonel Mangala Balasooriya, Secretary, Sri Lanka Army Squash Committee, Captain Namal Wijesundra (Rtd), President, Sri Lanka Squash Federation and a gathering of senior officers, officers and other ranks were there to watch the finals and awarding ceremony.

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, the Squash Officers Open Category witnessed the rise of a skilled young sapper officer, Captain Eranga Liyanagamage SLE, who clinched the championship.

After a series of closely contested encounters, the Gajaba Regiment emerged triumphant in the men's team championship. Their exceptional teamwork and individual prowess secured them the coveted title while the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers claimed the runners-up trophy. Not to be outdone, the Sapper players secured third place by triumphing over the Gunners players in an intense team encounter.

Major General Lanka Amarapala, known for his leadership on and off the squash court, displayed his prowess by becoming the champion of the Over 50 age category. Not stopping there, he also secured the runner-up position in the Over 45 age category, demonstrating his enduring commitment to the sport and his capacity to excel across generations.
