The Sinhala and Hindu New Year, which is one of annual, seasonal and cultural event in Sri Lanka, was celebrated by the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers holding three New Year Festivals at three different locations, facilitating Sapper Officers and Other Ranks to enjoy with their families and share the joy of the New Year.
The fist in the series of Sinhala Tamil New Year festival was held at Maththegoda on 10 April 2018. The Chief Field Engineer Major General Dudley Weeraman graced the occasion as the Chief Guest together with Mrs. Thakshila Weeraman. The traditional games and activities kept everyone involved and cheerful atmosphere prevailed throughout the event. The Chief Guest along with the Senior Officers gave away the gifts for the winners. The day’s event terminated having a beautiful musical evening.
The second festival was held at Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering, Thunkama, Embilipitiya on 18 April 2018. Master General of Ordnance Sri Lanka Army Major General Jagath Gunawardena graced the occasion as the Chief Guest along with Mrs. Sagara Gunawardena. The day’s event commenced with the Road Run. Thereafter a range of traditional games followed with greater enthusiasm. Finally, gifts were presented by the Chief Guest with the Senior Officers participated. At the end of the cultural games a beautiful musical evening was staged.
The third Festival was held at Boo Oya on 20 April 2018 at the Engineer Brigade complex. The Colonel Commandant and the Commander Security Forces (Jaffna) Major General Darshana Hettiarachchi graced the occasion as the chief Guest. Hoisting the national flag by the Colonel Commandant of Corps commenced the day’s events. Large gathering of Sapper Officers, Other Ranks along with their families shared Sinhala and Hindu New Year Festive sprits by participating in a wider variety of traditional and fun making games.
The Colonel Commandant and the Commander Security Forces (Jaffna) Major General Darshana Hettiarachchi and other Senior Officers gave away the gifts to the winners in different events and competitions, extending their best wishes for the New Year. A musical evening staged at the end of the cultural events and concluded the day’s event.
