SRI LANKAN PEACEKEEPERS IN MALI RECEIVE UN MEDALS FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE

The ceremonial Medal Awarding Parade of the Sri Lanka Guard Unit (SLGU) in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali - MINUSMA was glamorously held at GAO Super camp premises on Friday(19) July 2024.

Mr. Anton Antchev, the Director Liquidation Entity (MINUSMA) graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and, several senior officials from the United Nations in New York and representatives from the MINUSMA Operational Headquarters, Bamako were present for the occasion. Colonel W.W.N.P Wickramarachchi, the Contingent Commander of SLGU welcomed all invitees to the occasion.

During this memorable occasion, a total number of 207 Sri Lankan peacekeepers were awarded with UN MINUSMA medals. Subsequently, the Chief Guest complimented the troops of Sri Lanka Guard Unit for their professionalism and sheer dedication and he praised them for their substantial role to the MINUSMA by displaying courage and valour in the face of extreme adversity.

The occasion was dignified and brought about a spirit of celebration amidst fluttering UN and Sri Lankan National flags in the backyard. Major T.M.T De Silva USP psc SLAC was the Parade Commander. The Sri Lanka Guard Unit - MINUSMA is expected to return to Sri Lanka after terminating the mission in Mali shortly.
