1st Battalion Sri Lanka Army Corps of Agriculture & Livestock (SLACAL) Seva Vanitha Unit Conducts a Multifaceted Community Welfare Programme

The 1st Battalion Sri Lanka Army Corps of Agriculture & Livestock (1 SLACAL), under the auspices of its Seva Vanitha Branch, successfully conducted a multifaceted community-oriented programme on 28 July 2025 at its headquarters in Dombawelagama, Nochchiyagama. This initiative, aligned with the Seva Vanitha Branch’s monthly schedule for July, was spearheaded by Mrs Niroshika Karunapala, President of the SLACAL Seva Vanitha Branch.

The day’s proceedings commenced with the ceremonial arrival of the President and members of the SLACAL Seva Vanitha Branch, who were warmly received by Mrs Anushka Divarathna, the Seva Vanitha Coordinator of 1 SLACAL. The official programme began with the planting of a commemorative sapling by Mrs Karunapala, symbolising the unit’s continued commitment to environmental sustainability and long-term community development.

A central component of the day's events was the Blood Donation Programme, conducted in collaboration with the Regional Blood Centre of the General Hospital, Anuradhapura. This humanitarian initiative was carried out under the supervision and medical guidance of the centre’s staff. It witnessed the participation of approximately 100 donors, including members of the SLACAL Seva Vanitha Branch, senior officers, officers, other ranks, and civilian employees of the unit.

Mrs Karunapala, in her capacity as President of the SLACAL Seva Vanitha Branch, conducted an official inspection of the ongoing blood donation activities, recognising the volunteers’ contributions and extending her appreciation to the medical staff involved

Further enhancing the significance of the day, the President officially declared open the "Fruit Burst" Juice Bar and Ice Cream Corner – a newly established welfare project and income-generating initiative of 1 SLACAL. This facility is intended to support the unit’s ongoing welfare activities and stands as a testament to the Branch’s proactive approach in fostering sustainable development at regimental level.

The programme culminated with the conduct of the monthly meeting of the SLACAL Seva Vanitha Branch, during which key welfare matters, ongoing projects, and future initiatives were deliberated.

Brigadier TMSJ Thennakoon RSP, the Centre Commandant of SLACAL, also graced the occasion, lending his support to the initiatives carried out under the Seva Vanitha Branch's guidance. The day’s events collectively reflected the cohesive efforts of the military and civilian community within 1 SLACAL in promoting public service, environmental stewardship, and welfare-driven innovation.
