History

The Sri Lanka Army, operates a number of Army Farms and Agro projects throughout the island by conforming to the national policy of His Excellency the president, “Vistas of Prosperity and splendor” in creating a prosperous country.

They are forming a new class of troops, fully operational for the express goal of elevating the country's agricultural sector to new heights and raised Sri Lanka Army Corps of Agriculture and Livestock on 04th January 2021. The founder of the Corps of Agriculture & Livestock was then Commander of the Sri Lanka Army & Chief of Defense Staff, General LHSC Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc Mphil. The proceedings, related to the inauguration of the new Corps at Sri Jayawardenepura Army Headquarters on 07th January 2021. (ARO 35/2020)

Before establishing the Sri Lanka Army Corps of Agriculture and Livestock, Agricultural activities were coordinated by Directorate of Agriculture and Livestock since 25th October 2011. Presently Directorate facilitates the smooth conduct, promotion of projects and coordinates all related operational requirements in cooperation with state and other agencies.

The 5th and 6th (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps converted as the 2(V) SLACAL on 25 Jan 2021 and 3 (V) SLACAL on 10 Feb 2021. The 7th Sri Lanka National Guard converted as the 4(V) SLACAL on 25 Feb 2021. (ARO 37/2020,ARO 38/2020, ARO 39/2020)

The Regimental Headquarter was established on 29 March 2021 at Karandeniya collocated.With 2(V) SLACAL. Brigadier G B Liyanage RSP assumed duties as the first Centre Commandant. (MSB/A/6/1(APPT)( ) and Dated 19 Mar 2021).

The first Colonel Commandant of Sri Lanka Army Corps of Agriculture and Livestock is Major General WBSM Abeysekera RSP USP who assumed duties on 16 August 2021 at the Regimental Headquarters at Karandeniya in Ambalangoda.(MSB/A/6/1(APPT) (147) and Dated 11 Aug 2021.

Under the vision of Comd of the Army to develop agriculture within the Army and to assist nation’s ongoing National Agriculture Campaign another mile stone was created by establishing its newest wing,with the First Regular Battalion, 1SLACAL with the guidance of its first Col Commandant and the Director A & L on 01 Sep 2021 at a 38 acre land at Mahawa.

Inaugural Annual General Meeting of Corps of Agriculture & Livestock Seva Vanitha Branch was held at RHQ SLA, Panagoda on 17th Octomber 2021 and Mrs. Shanthie Abeysekera the first President of Corps of Agriculture & Livestock Seva Vanitha Branch graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.This is also another historical day for the SLACAL.

The 74th Independence Day celebration was held at the Independence Square in Colombo with the participation of Sri Lanka Army Corps of Agriculture and Livestock first time in history after established this new born regiment.

On the vision of the Commander of the Army to expan the "Green Agriculture " concept Sri Lanka Army has taken many to develop bare lands and utilize government lands in to agriculture.following that concept Sri Lanka Army Corps of Agriculture and Livestock raised two new battalions 5(V) SLACAL in Jaffna and 6 SLACAL in Kilinochchi.

Leiutent Colonel WPK Samaranayaka psc SLA assumed duties as the 1st Commanding Officer of the newly raised battalion 5(V) SLACAL on 22 March 2022 and Leiutent Colonel ASB Hapuwinna USP psc SLAC assumed duties as the 1st Commanding Officer of 6 SLACAL on 23 March 2022.The initiation of these new two battalions added another golden page to the history of Sri Lanka Army Corps of Agriculture and Livestock.

The Sri Lanka Army Corps of Agriculture and Livestock commenced the first Council Meeting by keeping another remarkable step forward for increase mechanization to bring more professional Corps of Agriculture. This will goes to the golden history of SLACAL.Regimental Council Meeting Was held on 30th Aprial 2022 at Regimental Centre - Karandeniya. Meeting was presided by Director General Financial Management (DGFM) of the Army and Colonel Commandant of Sri Lanka Army Corps of Agriculture & Livestock Major General WBSM Abeysekera RSP USP while elucidating his strategy as the first Colonel Commandant for bringing more professional and cohesive output in the Sri Lanka Army from the field of Agriculture and Livestock.
