INTRODUCTION
RASING OF SIXTH BATTALION OF SRI LANKA ARMY AGRICULTURE AND LIVESTOCK (6th Bn SLACAL)
Newly Established Battalion 6 SLACAL
This battalion was raised on 7 March 2022 as 6th Battalion of Sri Lanka Army Corps of Agriculture and Livestock which is located at Akkarayankulam, Kilinochchi. Lieutenant Colonel ASB Hapuwinna USP psc SLAC assumed duties as 1st Commanding Officer of newly raised battalion 6 SLACAL on 23 March 2022.
New Battalion, 6 SLACAL was raised to empower the northern region under the vision of Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army and, supervision and guidance under the Director General Financial Management (DGFM) of the Army and the Colonel Commandant of Sri Lanka Army Corps of Agriculture and Livestock Major General WBSM Abeysekera RSP USP and Director of A & L Brigadier AK Rajapaksa RSP. This newly raised battalion of 6 SLACAL was deployed on 07 February 2022 in Akkarayankulam, Kilinochchi aiming at the contributing Green Agriculture concept of the government.
The Lieutenant Colonel ASB Hapuwinna USP psc SLAC assumed duties as 1st Commanding Officer. This battalion aims to provide effective and active contribution to the agricultural industry and enhance government effort to develop and maintain agriculture while ensuring the food security and productivity within the national food link of the country.
6 SLACAL carried out joint agricultural projects with Directorate of Agriculture and Livestock. Headquarters Farm 6 SLACAL, Army farm Vellankulam, Army project Kottukattiarukulam, Army project Vennerikulam and agriculture project Venavil are ongoing long term large scale projects of 6 SLACAL.
Headquarters Farm of 6 SLACAL extent up to 13 acres and develop according to the Agro-Forestry concept. Army Farm Vellankulam extent up to 90 acres. Coconut, Maze, Cashews, Coffees and Chillies are the main cultivations of this under command farms. Army farm Venavil extent up to 10 acres and they are maintaining seed nursery, sesame cultivation and black gram cultivation. Army project Kottikattiarukulam extent up to 14 acres and 9 acres of this land is cultivated with sesame. A New Project Vennerikulam was established up to 20 acres. Chillies and Turkey berries were successfully grown in those farms.
