  • DRY RATIONS GIFTED TO BUDDHIST UNIVERSITY IN HOMAGAMA

    Major General Vikum Liyanage, Commander, Security Forces-West and Chairman, Army Buddhist Association donated dry ration packs to the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka at Homagama on Friday (18) for the benefit of resident student monks, remaining inside due to travel restrictions.

    Troops of the Security Force HQ - West renovated a dilapidated Ward for COVID-19 patients in the Avissawella Base Hospital which could accommodate 40 beds and formally vested it in the authorities on Monday (31) by Major General Vikum Liyanage, Commander Security Forces –West for patients as one more project.

    In order to find whether regional preparations for any contingencies are underway, General Shavendra Silva, Head of the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO), Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, together with several Senior Officers of relevance undertook an inspection tour this morning (27) to the Elpitiya new Intermediate Care Centre (ICC) at Idalkanda under construction and met troops giving final touches.

    As Army troops across the island at the request of the government moved to Galle, Matara, Matale, Kurunegala and Anuradhapura areas in the South, North-East, North Central Province and the Central Province to conduct/ assist regional COVID-19 Vaccination Centres after HE the President prioritized those areas for vaccination, General Shavendra Silva, Head of the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO), Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army this morning (27) made unannounced visits to Sri Sudarmaramaya in Batuwanhena, Elpitiya and Katukurunda Dharmika Vidyalaya in Habaraduwa Vaccination Centres and saw for himself how those Centres were functional with active support of Army troops.

  • SF - WEST TROOPS DEPLOYED ALONG COASTAL BELT TO DISPERSE PEOPLE COLLECTING SHIP DEBRIS & HELP CONSERVE ENVIRONMENT

    A large contingent of more than 300 Army personnel of the Quick Reaction Team, Drone Unit of the Artillery Regiment and the Bomb Disposal Squad on the directions of General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army early this morning (27) were positioned along Negombo to Porutota coastal belt areas of about 6 km, in an attempt to prevent people from collecting debris and floating items of the ill-fated container ship, 'X-press Pearl', still on fire off Colombo Harbour.
