SLE COLONEL COMMANDANT MAJOR GENERAL JAGATH GUNAWARDENA BIDS FAREWELL

Major General Jagath Gunawardena, 55th Chief of staff of Sri Lanka Army and the 17th Colonel Commandant of Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE) received a customary farewell on 14 December 2020 when he called at Regimental Headquarters – Panagoda before he retires from the Army after a productive service of more than 35 years.

On the last day of his service, in conformity with military traditions Major General Jagath Gunawardena was warmly welcomed by the Centre Commandant, Brigadier Mangala Mayadunna and accorded a Guard Turn out on his arrival at the venue. Afterwards, he laid a floral wreath at the War Heroes' monument in remembrance of fallen War Heroes. Subsequently, he was honoured in a ceremonial parade. Afterwards, accompanied by Senior Officers he took part in an All-Ranks tea table at the Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess. Towards the end of the day’s programme, in a moving gesture all Officers and Other Ranks after the tea, honoured him in a street line farewell as his vehicle began to move on.

Major General Jagath Gunawardena joined Sri Lanka Army on 18 January 1985 and was Commissioned on 31 May 1986. Presently he completed his service nearly 36 years.

During his military career, he has held so many command, staff and instructor appointments in different capacities.
