CORPS OF SRI LANKA ENGINEERS LAUNCHED RESCUE AND RELIEF OPERATIONS ISLAND WIDE

Due to the prevailing severe weather conditions in the country, sappers are continuously committed towards rescue and relief Operations Island wide since 15th May 2016. Panaduara area was heavily affected by heavy storms on 15th May evening hours displaced large number of people and house structures were heavily damaged. Troops from 1st Field Engineer Regiment together with 5th Field Engineers Regiment, 14th Independent Engineers Regiment and 4th (V) Engineers Regiment troops rushed to the area and cleared wreckage of affected houses. Meanwhile 7th Field Engineers Regiment engaged in rescue and relief operations for people affected by floods in Somawatiya and Kiran areas in the eastern province. 1st Field Engineers Regiment completed another major rescue and relief operations to save people affected by land slide in Bulathkohupitiya and Dehiowita areas on 16th May. A roads which were affected due to landslides had been cleared by Engineers troops to facilitate the vehicle movements in the area. 5th Field Engineer Troops launched a rescue operation in Samasara Hill in Aranayake where number of people displaced. It is also confirmed more than 40 people were killed and more than 100 people were missing.
