TROOPS OF 5 FIELD ENGINEER REGIMENT EVACUATE VICTIMS AT GALKANDA, PUWAKPITIYA LANDSLIDE

Due to the adverse weather condition effected to all over the country, 5 Field Engineer troops were engaging in disaster relief operations at General area Egodagama together with Divisional Secretariat Office Seethawaka.

There has been sudden landslide taken place at Galkanda village yesterday morning (04 June 24) casing one of houses at the village fully damage. Afterwords, due to the continues sings for a possible tragedy which could occur, an instance call received to the Commanding Officer 5 Field Engineer Regiment who was already on ground with his troops around 1430 hrs yesterday (04 June 24), from the Divisional Secretary – Seethawaka and made a sudden request to evacuate all the victims who were remaining at high-risk area where the landslide occurred in the morning.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Commanding Officer 5 Field Engineer Regiment, in response to the request made by Divisional Secretary – Seethawaka, mobilized his troops with adequate resources and with the guidance and direction by the Commander 142 Infantry Brigade, in order to address the issue promptly.

Commanding Officer together with 1 x 15 of troops rushed to the location by 1445 hrs alerting all the residents who were at their houses at Galkanda Village, despite of the high risk for a possible massive landslide. Afterwords, troops were able to evacuate 14 personnels including 04 x Children, 03 x Elderly persons, 04 x Ladies and 03 x Gents who had not been able to make a movement to a safer location, to the Puwakpitiya KV. The prompt action made the troops led victims to ease off their fear and life threat from a huge tragedy.
