SWIFT AND EFFECTIVE RESPONSE: 14 CBRNE RESPONSE REGIMENT SUCCESSFULLY HANDLED A HAZARDOUS GAS LEAKAGE

On 5 April 2024, the 14 Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) Response Regiment SLE stationed at Mattegoda demonstrated its expertise and readiness when it swiftly responded to a hazardous gas leakage incident at Lanka Steel Company in Weliweriya. The timely and professional actions of the CBRN Response team averted potential harm to civilians and property, showcasing their commitment to safety and disaster response.

The deputy director of the Disaster Management Centre - Gampaha alerted the 14 CBRNE Response Regiment at 1400 hrs about a hazardous gas leakage at a scrap metal collecting point located in Embaraluwa, Weliweriya (Lanka Steel Company). The gas, emitting from a 111kg cylinder, posed a significant risk to the surrounding area. Within 40 minutes of receiving the distress call, a dedicated CBRN Response team from the Regiment reached the scene fully equipped and prepared. Their prompt dispatch minimized the exposure time and potential impact of the leaked gas.

CBRN Response team meticulously planned & executed this operation under the direct guidance of the Engineer Division. They efficiently neutralized the threat by safely relocating the cylinder to a secure area, mitigating the risk of further leakage and ensuring the safety of the nearby residents and properties.
