SAPPERS TO CELEBRATE SINHALA-HINDU NEW YEAR FESTIVAL 2016
Sinhalese New Year, generally known as Aluth Avurudda, is the new year of the Sinhalese people in Sri Lanka. It is a major anniversary celebrated by not only the Sinhalese people but by most Sri Lankans. The timing of the Sinhala New Year coincides with the New Year celebrations of many traditional calendars of South and Southeast Asia.
According to Sinhalese astrology, New Year begins when the sun moves from Meena Rashiya to Mesha Rashiya. It also marks the end of the harvest and spring.
Members of the Sapper Family are readying to celebrate the Sinhala-Hindu New Year along with Festival atmosphere in the country. Continuing its\' traditions, all members of Sapper Family will cooperate to celebrate the new year festival 2016 at Boo-oya Army camp on 17 April 2016, Mattegoda Army camp on 20 April 2016 and Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering Embilipitiya on 23 April 2016. This will give the prominence to traditions and include an array of competitions and games participated with enthusiasm by Sapper Officers, Other Ranks and their families.
Different games of traditional and fun making have been organized during the celebrations, including cadjan weaving, bun eating, pillow-fights, Raban playing, grease pole climbing, selection of the Princes of the New Year \'Awurudu Kumari\', eye-placing on the Elephant, lime balancing, slow cycle-peddling, tug of war, fancy dress parade etc.
The event will be organized and manage by Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers Seva Vanitha Branch in Collaboration with Engineer Brigade at Boo-oya, Independant Workshop at Mattegoda and Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering at Embilipitiya. Organizing committee of the Sapper New Year festival request the pleasure of the company of all Sapper Officers, Other Ranks and their family members to grace the events.
