RENOVATION OF BRIDGE TO 'PARAVI DUWA' DECLARED OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

The bridge connecting Matara City to 'Paravi Duwa' (Pigeon Island), declared open for public on 23 November 2023 aimed at facilitating the 'Katina Pooja' at the Pigeon Island Temple. The original suspension bridge collapsed on March 4, 2022, necessitating the construction of a temporary bridge. The renovation of the new bridge involved widening the deck to 7 feet with handrails on both sides, a length of 340 feet, and an estimated budget of 50 lakhs. The challenging construction process faced difficulties due to the sea's nature, bad weather conditions, and site topography. The establishment of foundations required careful consideration of sea conditions. The project was carried out under the guidance of military personnel, including the Colonel Commandant, Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers, Chief Field Engineer, and General Officer Commanding of Engineer Division, along with dedicated officers and personnel of the 4 (V) Engineer Regiment SLE and troops from the 12 (V) Corps of Engineer Services.

The commendable efforts of both the 4 (V) Engineer Regiment troops and 12 (V) Corps of Engineer Services, despite numerous challenges, received appreciation from local authorities and the public. The reconstructed bridge not only restores a crucial link between Matara City and 'Paravi Duwa' but also symbolizes the determination, cooperation, dedication, and the indomitable spirit of the Sappers. The restored access to the 'Matara Paravi Duwa' Temple is expected to bring joy and relief to those who hold the sacred site close to their hearts.
