NEWLY-CONSTRUCTED CONVENTIONAL CENTRE AT SALEBA IS OPENED

The newly-constructed Conventional Centre for All Army Officers at Sappers Leisure Bay in Mattegoda Camp was declared open by Major General Jagath Gunawardena, the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and the Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers amidst chanting of ‘Seth Pirith’ and blessings of the Maha Sangha on 14 December 2020.

The Conventional Centre is constructed within 55 days with the sheer commitment and dedication of the Sappers of 1 Field Engineer Regiment, 5 Field Engineer Regiment, 14 CBRN Regiment, 16 Workshop Regiment, 4(V) Regiment SLE and 15(V) Regiment SLE.

A brief ceremony adhering to health regulations saw the day’s Chief Guest unveiling the plaque and cut a ribbon to declared it open. As the chief guest for the occasion, Major General Jagath Gunawardena, joined spilling of milk (Kiri Ithiraweema) after warming the building. Planting of a sapling by the day's Chief Guest to mark this event brought the day's event to culmination.

Senior Officers, including Major General Kumara Peiris - the Additional Director, Project Management Unit of Defence Headquarters complex project, Major General Nihal Amarasekara - Chief Field Engineer, Major General Chinthaka Gamage - Security Force Commander (East), Major General Chandana Wijesundera - General Officer Commanding Engineer Division, Officers and large gathering of Other Ranks were associated with the event keeping with COVID -19 safety guidelines.
