Major General Lanka Amarapala RWP RSP ndc psc, Commander Security Forces (West) and Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers, formally inaugurated the newly constructed three-story Other Ranks’ accommodation facility of the 5 Field Engineer Regiment during a ceremonial event on 30th December.
The Colonel Commandant was welcomed by Major General SPG Gamage RWP RSP USP, General Officer Commanding of the Sri Lanka Army Engineer Division, and Major RRLD Rathnayaka USP psc SLE, Commanding Officer of the 5 Field Engineer Regiment. The opening ceremony featured traditional rituals, including blessings by the Maha Sangha, a symbolic ribbon-cutting, and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.
Guided by Major General Lanka Amarapala, the project was initiated to address the pressing accommodation needs of Other Ranks, demonstrating the Corps’ unwavering commitment to improving the living standards of Sappers. Completed within a remarkably short timeframe, the building alleviates longstanding accommodation challenges for personnel stationed at the Home of Sappers in Mattegoda. This includes units such as the Engineer Division, 5 Field Engineer Regiment, 14 CBRNE Regiment SLE, and 16 Workshop Regiment SLE. During the event, the Colonel Commandant commended the construction team for their exceptional dedication and professionalism, ensuring the project’s high quality within the stipulated timeline.
As a gesture of appreciation, the Colonel Commandant presented a special memento to the Brigadier YKS Rangika psc ptsc, Director of the Directorate of Engineer Services in recognition of his professional guidance and support in completing the project successfully.
Following the handover of the new accommodation facility, Major General Lanka Amarapala also inspected the recently renovated Junior Officers’ accommodations at the Officers’ Mess complex. These renovations, the first of their kind in many years, are part of broader efforts to enhance living conditions across the cantonment, ensuring a comfortable and conducive environment for all personnel. This event was attended by Major General TC Peiris RSP USP, the Chief Field Engineer of the Sri Lanka Army, Council Members, Senior Officers, Officers, Regimental Sergeant Majors, Noncommissioned Officers and Sappers of the Corps.
