FAMILY OF LATE BRIGADIER P D RAMANAYAKE VISITS REGIMENTAL CENTRE

The family of late Brigadier PD Ramanayake, who is recognized as the\' Father of Corps of Engineers\' made a goodwill visit to the Regimental Centre on 7th June 2014. Late Brigadier Ramanyake who pioneered in raising a Field Engineering Squadron in 1951 when Sri Lanka Army was established, was born on the 26th March 1917 to a very respectable family in Panadura. He had his primary and secondary education at St. John\'s College, Panadura and was graduated from University of Colombo. He served the Sri Lanka Army from February 1950 to March 1971 and held several key and prestigious appointments in the Army and Corps as well. On the way, he became the first Commanding Officer of 1 Field Engineer Regiment. In recognition of his dedicated effort in raising and shaping the Corps from mere beginnings, he is honoured today as the \'Father of Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers\'. The family members of Late Brigadier Ramanayake (Mr Lalith Ramanayake , Mrs Nelun Thennakoon and Ms Tara Ramanayake) visited the Regimental Head quarters of Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers reminding and recalling the great memories that he left behind. On arrival, they were very warmly welcomed by Major General VUB Nananyakkara USP psc Hdmc, Colonel Commandant of Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers and other senior Officers. At a tea party held at the Officers Mess, the great service rendered by Late Brigadier Ramanayake was appreciated whilst bringing back old memories with his family members. They presented a farewell photograph(1965) of Late Brigadier Ramanayake to Major General VUB Nananyakkara USP psc Hdmc, Colonel Commandant of Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers. Subsequently, all officers accompanied them to visit the camp and to see Brigadier PD Ramanayaka Memorial Sports Ground. Brigdaier HJS Gunawardane RSP USP psc Centre Commandant, and other Officers of RHQ SLE were presented for this memorable occasion.
