THE CORPS OF SRI LANKA ENGINEERS CONDUCTS A CBRN AWARENESS PROGRAMME FOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS IN PUTTALAM

In a significant step towards enhancing national preparedness against Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) threats, Major Asanka Hidallaarachchi RSP USP SLE, Commanding Officer of the 8 Field Engineer Regiment SLE, conducted a comprehensive awareness programme at the Puttalam Divisional Secretariat on December 20, 2024.

The programme brought together a wide spectrum of stakeholders, including government agents from the Puttalam Divisional Secretariat Division, tri-forces officers, police and Special Task Force (STF) personnel, officers from the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), and various other government officials.

The programme focused on four key areas:

1 . Basic Awareness of CBRN Threats: Participants were introduced to the potential risks posed by CBRN incidents, highlighting the need for vigilance and proactive measures in safeguarding the community.

2 . Identification of CBRN Risks: Practical methods for identifying and assessing potential CBRN risks were discussed, equipping attendees with the knowledge to recognize early warning signs.

3 . Sri Lanka Army’s Role in CBRN Preparation and Response: The pivotal role of the Sri Lanka Army in preparing for and responding to CBRN incidents was emphasized, showcasing its expertise and commitment to national security.

4 . Army’s Capacity in CBRN Operations: Showcasing specialized capabilities, equipment, and readiness.

The session also facilitated discussions and clarified participants’ queries regarding CBRN response mechanisms. Attendees appreciated the Army’s proactive role in fostering multi-agency collaboration and preparedness, underscoring the importance of continued efforts to enhance resilience and coordination.

This initiative reflects the Sri Lanka Army’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the nation while empowering key stakeholders to effectively address emerging threats.
