The Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers, globally known as Sappers, matured into its 70th birthday on 09th November 2021 as one of finest Combat Support Arm of the Sri Lanka Army and as a key stakeholder of nation-building having the motto of “Motherland, Honour, and Service.
A simple celibration was taken place adhering to the laid down Covid protocols at its Regimental Headquarters premises at Army Cantonment, Panagoda.
The incumbent Colonel Commandant of the Regiment, Major General AN Amarasekara USP ndu who is also the Chief Field Engineer of the Sri Lanka Army at this milestone anniversary while paying tribute to the memory of all 656 fallen War Heroes of the Sapper family and remembering 260 injured War Heroes, Retired War Heroes, Serving Officers and All Ranks on this 70th Corps Day conveyed his best wishes and warm greetings.
Founded on 9 November 1951, under the leadership of Brigadier (late) PD Ramanayake as the Father of the Corps, thereafter the Corps was expanded to an Office of the Chief Field Engineer, a Field Engineer Brigade, and under the Regimental Headquarters, 11 regular regiments (Including 14 CBRN Regiment and 16 Workshop Regiment) and 2 volunteer regiment.
Keeping another gigantic milestone from its inception, the multi-skilled and multi-faceted Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers raised its newest first Army Engineers Division, aimed at centralizing coordination, undertaking, distribution, and execution of all Nation-building engineering tasks adding two more engineer brigades (Plant Engineer Brigade and General Engineering Brigade) under the guidance and direction of Chief of Defence Staff and the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army General LHSC Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil. This was a significant achievement for the entire organisation as promulgated in the Commander of the Army’s visionary 'Way Forward Strategy 2020-2025'.
The enormous and noteworthy contribution of the Corps of Engineers has paved the way to save the motherland from more than 3-decade conflict and in the post-conflict scenario, the Corps save a large sum of foreign exchange for the country by actively participating in the nation-building tasks and Humanitarian Demining in North and East of the country.
