CORPS OF SRI LANKA ENGINEERS CBRN OPERATORS SKILLS UPGRADED IN TWO-DAY WORKSHOP

In today's dynamic and challenging environment, it is crucial for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) operators to continuously update their knowledge and skills. This need has become increasingly evident in the wake of recent incidents in chemical factories, which demanded swift and safe responses from CBRN operators of the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers. Recognizing this urgent requirement, under the close supervision of the General Officer Commanding - Engineer Division and the Commanding Officer of 14 CBRNE Response Regiment, organized a comprehensive two-day workshop aimed at enhancing the capabilities of CBRN operators within the Corps.

The workshop was held on the 10th and 11th of June 2024 at the Home of Sappers – Mattegoda with participation of 12 Officers and 70 Other Ranks from under command units. The National Authority for the Implementation of Chemical Weapons Convention (NACWC) and the Central Environmental Authority conducted lectures and practical sessions, providing invaluable insights and hands-on experience.

The workshop's curriculum was meticulously designed to cover a range of critical topics. Participants gained in-depth knowledge on handling chemicals agents during accidents involving hazardous materials and an essential skill for ensuring the safety of both personnel and the public. Sessions on chemical waste management and disposal which was conducted by the Central Environment Authority, highlighted best practices and innovative approaches to mitigate environmental risks. Additionally, the training addressed both local and international regulations related to chemical handling and disposal, ensuring that CBRN operators are well-versed in compliance requirements.

One of the key highlights of the workshop was the focus on knowledge and experience sharing with subject matter experts in the field. This interactive session allowed CBRN operators to clarify their doubts in real incidents. By engaging directly with experts and simulating real-life scenarios, operators applied their newly acquired knowledge in a controlled environment. This hands-on approach reinforced theoretical concepts and significantly boosted the confidence and readiness of the operators to respond effectively to actual emergencies.

The success of this workshop underscores the commitment of the Sri Lanka Army Engineers to maintain a high state of preparedness in CBRN operations. By continuously upgrading the skills and knowledge of their operators, they ensure that the Corps is equipped to handle the complex challenges posed by chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats.
