CORPS OF ENGINEER TROOPS UNDERTAKE CLEARANCE OPERATIONS AT SALAWA – KOSGAMA

Members of the Corps of Engineers began to clear the area and defuse Unexploded Ordnance (UXO’s) at Salawa – Kosgama ammunition dump on 7 June 2016 morning onwards. Clearing was initiated with the direction of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe de Silva and Commander Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force/Colonel Commandant of Corps of Engineers Major General Channa Goonetilleke . Sappers began clearing the area under the close supervision of the Chief Field Engineer Major General Dhananjith Karunarathne and Commander Engineer Brigade, Brigadier Amith Seneviratne. Corps of Engineers commenced the clearance with the participation of more than thirty Officers and approximately five hundred other ranks from all Field Engineer units. Simultaneously the two volunteer battalions [4(V) SLE and 15(V) SLE] are assisting in repairs and reconstruction of the damaged houses. Corps of Engineer troops involved in clearance operations of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO’s) which were fallen into civilian houses, government controlled institutions, schools, hospitals and economically valued areas. Troops have cleared either side of High level road, Salawa Hospital Premises, Ranaviru Village, Hindu Collage premises, Don Bosco Collage, Salawa Plantation Housing scheme premises and Kosgama Police station premises.
