COMPOST FERTILIZER PROJECT IN 8 FIELD ENGINEER REGIMENT

Present National Policy Framework affirms to produce a healthy and productive citizenry; the government ensures the right of the people to access a non-toxic and balanced diet. To achieve this objective the government has taken measures to ensure that only organic fertilizer would be used in the agriculture sector in Sri Lanka in the future.

Following the guidelines given by the Sri Lankan Army, the Commanding Officer of 8 Field Engineer Regiment has taken the initiative to implement the production of compost fertilizer with available resources. Composting is conducting in natural process of decomposition of organic materials by microorganisms under controlled conditions inside the unit premises. Raw organic materials such as crop residues, animal wastes, green manures, aquatic plants, food garbage is applying to enhance the suitability for application to the soil as a fertilizing resource, after having undergone composting.

The end product of the process is compost which has value in agriculture. It is added to the crops currently cultivating in the 8 Field Engineer Regiment such as mango, Plate brush (thibbatu), maniac, Green chilies etc. In addition, compost is considered as a value added product of organic materials, having a commercial value that unit have sold 6000Kg to the Ceylon Fertilizer Company Ltd with direction of Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) which has been brought financial benefit to the unit too.
