The 14 CBRNE Response Regiment organized a Inter-Unit Badminton Tournament on the 27th and 28th of February 2025 at Home of Sappers Maththegoda, bringing together 34 players from various regiments of the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers. The event saw thrilling matches across several categories, providing a platform for athletes to showcase their skills and compete for the coveted titles.
The tournament featured a variety of categories, including Team Event, Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles, Over 35 Singles & Doubles, and Over 45 Singles. The competition was intense, with the 6 Field Engineer Regiment emerging as the Team Event Champions, and the 14 CBRNE Response Regiment securing the Runner-Up position. In the men’s singles, Staff Sergeant Konara KMKS from the 8 Field Engineer Regiment triumphed, while Captain PCJ Kumaranathunga SLE from the 5 Field Engineer Regiment took home the Women’s Singles title, displaying remarkable skill and determination throughout the event.
In the Over 45 category, Lieutenant Colonel HWAC Chaminda SLE, the Commanding Officer of the 16 Workshop Regiment, emerged as the Champion, with Colonel JACS Jagoda psc, the Commandant of the Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering, securing the Runner-Up position.
The primary goal of the tournament was to identify potential players for the official Badminton Team of the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers, making it a significant event in the Corps’ sporting calendar. The competition offered a platform for players to demonstrate their talents, with the best players selected to represent the Corps in future badminton competitions.
The tournament concluded with a energetic prize-giving ceremony, attended by the Chief Guest, Brigadier F Joseph USP, the Centre Commandant of the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers. Brigadier F Joseph congratulated all the participants for their exceptional performances and commended the tournament's role in fostering unity, teamwork, and fitness within the Corps.
