To enhance the knowledge and experience of Army first responders regarding the safe handling of hazardous chemicals and safety precautions for radiation hazards, the Officers’ of Advanced CBRN Response Course 2024 conducted a field visit to the Sri Lanka Gamma Centre (SLGC), Malwana, and the Water Treatment Plant, Biyagama, on 05 December 2024.
With the collaboration of Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board, provided participants with real-time exposure to radiation safety measures, practical applications of radiation, and insights into the irradiation process. The SLGC is Sri Lanka's first government-owned multipurpose gamma irradiation facility, utilizing a Cobalt-60 radioactive source for various applications, including the irradiation of food, surgical gloves, and medical equipment. This visit was instrumental in familiarizing participants with radiation safety protocols and the critical role of gamma irradiation in diverse industries.
The visit to the Water Treatment Plant, organized in collaboration with the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, focused on the safe handling of hazardous chemicals such as chlorine gas, which is extensively used in water treatment processes. Participants gained valuable experience and learned about the procedures and safety precautions essential for managing hazardous chemicals. These insights are expected to significantly benefit first responders when dealing with hazardous accidents or incidents involving chemicals.
Under the supervision of the Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering, the 14 CBRNE Response Regiment organized the visits to enhance understanding of potential hazards and foster practical preparedness for CBRN incidents. This initiative also aimed to strengthen the bond between CBRN stakeholders and high-risk facilities, ensuring a collaborative approach to safety and response planning.
