SRI LANKA SCHOOL OF MILITARY ENGINEERING LEADS CLEANUP DRIVE AT CHANDRIKA WEWA

In a commendable effort aligning with the national "Clean Sri Lanka" initiative and commemorating the 78th Independence Day, the Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering (SLSME) organized a comprehensive cleanup operation around Chandrika Wewa on 04 February 2026. The event, spearheaded by the Commandant of Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering, Colonel JACS Jagoda psc, brought together military personnel, local communities, and environmental enthusiasts to restore the area's pristine condition. Adding spiritual significance and community harmony to the event, monks from the ‘Bojirajaramaya Piriven Viharaya’ also attended under the patronage of Ven. Dr. Omalpe Sobhitha Thero. This initiative not only highlights the armed forces' commitment to environmental stewardship but also serves as a fitting tribute to the nation's independence by fostering a cleaner, greener future.

The cleanup drive at Chandrika Wewa saw enthusiastic participation from the staff of the SLSME and local communities who meticulously removed litter, plastic waste, and invasive debris from the reservoir's surroundings. Furthermore, as a practical and lasting contribution, SLSME installed newly made garbage bins in key places where people gather around the Chandrika Wewa, encouraging proper waste disposal and helping prevent future littering.

This successful endeavor underscores the broader impact of military civilian collaborations in addressing environmental issues in Sri Lanka. By initiating such projects, SLSME set a precedent for ongoing conservation efforts, inspiring other institutions to contribute to the "Clean Sri Lanka" goals. As the nation reflects on its 78 years of independence, initiatives like this remind us that true freedom includes the responsibility to protect our shared heritage. Future plans include regular monitoring and additional cleanups, ensuring Chandrika Wewa's legacy endures for generations to come.
