As per the information of Disaster Management Center and the guidance of the Directorate of Operations and the Engineer Division, Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Response troops were engaged to control the massive fire in Board of Investment (BOI) Industrial zone - Horana on 12 February 2025.
The fire broke out at a fragrance manufacturing factory around 1630 hrs, originating from the storage area. The facility, which specialized in cinnamon-based production, was completely destroyed, including its laboratories, equipment, and production materials. Due to the presence of highly flammable chemicals such as Methyl-benzene, Methyl Acetate, Ethyl Acetate, and Ethyl Alcohol, immediate action was taken to remove hazardous substances from the premises to minimize the risk of further escalation.
A well-coordinated effort involving 3 x 20 CBRN Response troops, along with fire brigades from Colombo, Kalutara, Kotte Municipal Councils, and the Horana Fire Brigade, successfully contained the fire and prevented it from spreading to adjacent facilities. Their swift response and effective collaboration were instrumental in mitigating potential hazards and ensuring public safety.
