Major M A P Abeywickrama psc SLE assumed duties as the 19th Officiating Commanding Officer of the 7 Field Engineer Regiment on 29 December 2025. The occasion was conducted with due military decorum and tradition, reflecting pride, discipline, and continuity of leadership within the regiment.
The event commenced with a Guard Turnout, symbolizing the honour and respect accorded to the incoming Commanding Officer. This was followed by the formal assumption of duties at an auspicious time, during which the official handing-over documents were signed, marking the lawful transfer of command.
Subsequently, officers of the regiment conducted a unit briefing to acquaint the Commanding Officer with current roles, tasks, and ongoing activities the briefing ensured a comprehensive situational update.
The event continued with the planting of a traditional tree sapling to commemorate the occasion. Thereafter, the new Commanding Officer addressed all officers and other ranks, outlining his expectations for the tenure of his command.
In his address, he emphasized discipline as the foundation of military excellence and reaffirmed the regiment’s classical role and core tasks. He highlighted that professional competence and operational readiness can only be achieved through systematic, and continuous training. Stressing unity and collective effort, he called upon all ranks to work together as a cohesive team to face future challenges with confidence and determination.
