Being a soldier means being physically strong Nonetheless, the 14 CBRNE Response Regiment understands that a well-rounded strategy that incorporates both mental and physical resilience is the key to true strength. In keeping with this dedication, the regiment recently held an essential workshop for all of its sports teams that focused on improving sportsmanship and mental health.
This workshop happened early in the year, right before the sports tournaments started. The idea was to give the athletes a "boost" and prepare them mentally for the competitions ahead.
Two distinguished experts in the field of mental health, Dr. Kavinda De Silva and Licensed Psychotherapist & Counsellor, Psychological Lecturer Dhanushi Perera, led an enlightening workshop that brought together athletes from different disciplines within the regiment under the direction of the Commanding Officer. This program demonstrates the regiment's commitment to developing well-rounded people who can succeed in their roles and on the field.
Numerous important subjects pertaining to both general wellbeing and sports performance were covered in the session. Participants investigated the significance of;
● Mental Resilience: Participants acquired useful techniques for handling stress, overcoming obstacles, and focussing under duress. In addition to being useful in athletics, these strategies also directly relate to the difficulties encountered in military operations.
● Performance psychology: The physicians discussed how mental exercises like mindfulness, positive self-talk, and visualisation can have a big impact on performance. Athletes can reach their greatest potential by using their mental faculties.
● Communication and Team Cohesion: The session stressed the value of good team dynamics and communication. Establishing a supportive environment and establishing trust were emphasised as essential components of success.
● Stress Reduction and Health: The sessions provided useful strategies for stress management, relaxation, and mental health prioritisation, acknowledging the particular challenges faced by military members. The goal of this all-encompassing strategy is to give athletes the tools they need to successfully manage their military duties and athletic endeavours.
The two medical professionals' expertise enabled a targeted analysis of strategies like mindfulness, visualisation, and cognitive reframing, which were presented in a context that was applicable to both military operations and athletic competition, highlighting the transferable skills of mental resilience and focus under pressure. This approach focused on the practical application of these techniques in high-stress situations.
This effort by the 14 CBRNE Response Regiment shows that the military is starting to recognize how important mental fitness is. By providing expert help and encouraging open conversations about mental wellbeing, the regiment is helping its athletes prioritize their overall health. Starting this program early in the year will not only help the athletes perform better in their tournaments but also make them stronger and more prepared in all aspects of their service. This workshop is a big step in making mental fitness a regular part of how soldier-athletes are trained and developed.
