In a vibrant display of tradition and unity, the Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) ushered in the Sinhala and Tamil New Year 2025 with a series of cultural and religious observances on 14 April 2025. The event was held under the guidance and patronage of the Commander Security Forces (Wanni) Major General K M P S B Kulatunga RSP ndc psc.
The day’s proceedings commenced in the early hours with the symbolic lighting of the fire (Kiri Ithiraweema) at 0404 hrs, in front of the Headquarters Office Complex. This sacred ritual marked the beginning of the New Year by signifying purification, renewal, and the dispelling of past misfortunes a time honoured tradition deeply rooted in Sri Lankan culture.
Following this, an all-ranks tea gathering was held at the “Mewadana Geya,” promoting camaraderie and togetherness among officers and other ranks. In keeping with age-old customs, the celebration continued with planting of saplings and paddy sowing, representing prosperity and a fresh start to the year. These symbolic acts were conducted as part of the traditional New Year’s first working day ritual.
Mrs. G A Kulatunga and Major General K M P S B Kulatunga RSP ndc psc Commander Security Forces (Wanni) graced the occasion with their presence and active participation, further highlighting the significance of family, culture, and community within the military framework.
The celebration reflected the essence of unity, discipline, and cultural reverence core values upheld by the Sri Lanka Army and fostered a spirit of renewal and collective strength for the year ahead.
